Reports

Round 1:       5 Sep 2009   vs Mackillop @ Chapman Gardens                                           Lost 16-23

The first game of 2009 and for seven of the team their first game of tee-ball.  After a good start in the first innings, where the score was 5-5 after even digs, the Mackillop pitcher found ways to keep removing our runners coming home from third base in the second innings and the Blues were outscored 1-6.  The Blues matched Mackillop after that but could never make up the difference.  It was a solid effort for a season opener and the new players particularly gave some good displayers.  Player of the match was Raymond Freyer for his attempted catches at pitcher and good hitting with the bat.

Round 2:       12 Sep 2009 vs Penrith @ Peter van Hasselt Reserve                                 Lost 9 – 14

There was a lot to like in this week’s game.  Rooty Hill jumped to an early two run lead after dismissing three Penrith batters for just four runs then bringing home six in the first innings.  Penrith turned the tide however in the second and a 5-1 score against put the Blues back on the back foot.  Great efforts in the field, particularly by Ray, Drew, Monique and Ryan and some nice hitting off the tee by Drew and Zane help bridge the gap, but again it was the cure of the one bad inning that cost the game.  Player of the match was Sally Reweti, whose instinctive catch at pitcher and two bag hit in the third were highlights.

Round 3:       19 Sep 2009 vs Boomers @ Peter van Hasselt Reserve                             Lost 9 – 13

Another heartbreaker this week.  The Blues played a great game of tee ball and showed that the training is starting to pay off, but for the third week in a row, we had the one inning that cost us the game – the one where Rooty Hill scores no runs and the other team jumps away. The Blues had runners on third coming home to score on a number of occasions but the opposition pitcher was in a great position to effect the tag.  That is not to denigrate the efforts of our players though and there were plenty of highlights to take away – Ryan and Drew notching two-baggers, a great tag play by Emma, a sensational stop at shortstop by Ray and some never say die base running by Jeremy, Dylan and Matthew.  Player of the match was Emma for her fielding and batting.  Next time, Gladiators…

Round 4:       27 Sep 2008 vs Plumpton @ Peter van Hasselt Reserve                            Lost 15 – 26

This was a fast paced game where five innings were completed.  Rooty Hill started well but the Braves fielding kept the Blues run tally in check.  There were great efforts in the field by all our players but unfortunately some of the throws and catches didn’t quite stick.  Player of the match was Tristan who hit some great balls and fielded magnificently at third base.

Round 5:       17 Oct 2009  vs Mackillop @ Peter van Hasselt Reserve                             Lost 17 - 21

The one that got away.  The Blues did well, matching Mackillop run for run right throughout the game until the last innings where the Blues struggled to get a run.  Once again, our fielding showed great improvement and there was a lot to like – the players are really starting to think about the game.  Player of the match was Bowe for his effort in getting home three times – his first runs of the year.  Well done

Round 6:       24 Oct 2009  vs Colyton St Clair Apache @ Samuel Marsden Reserve   Won 20 - 12

A WIN!  Congratulations go to the players who played really well today.  Everything stuck and there wasn’t a bad player on the diamond.  There were great plays by all players in the field and off the tee, with special mention to Drew and Monique for their long hits and Emma and Ryan for their efforts in the field.  Player of the match was Sally for her good hitting and fielding at pitcher.

Round 7:       31 Oct 2009  vs Penrith @ Andrews Road                                                       Lost 7 – 17

A day of mixed weather and mixed fortune for the Blues, who were behind the eight ball from the first inning against a strong Penrith team.  A lopsided score line belies the effort the Blues put into the game.  Solid batting from Ray, Drew, Ryan, and Monique was largely unrewarded due to the close in fielding of the Panthers.  Likewise, there were some impressive efforts in the field from Emma, Drew and Bowe.  Write this one off to experience – sport does that sometimes.  Player of the match was Drew Lloyd, who wins the McDonalds award for the week.

Round 8:       7 Nov 2009   vs Boomers @ Tregear Reserve                                                Drew 15 – 15

An enjoyable game of tee ball.  The Blues batted and fielded very well today, with some great saves in the field, good throws and a couple of good put out plays at first and second.  The batting was much improved and several players managed two-base hits, with most managing safe hits to first.  The running between bases was probably the best of the season to date.  Player of the match with her great batting was Monique Powell.

Round 9:       14 Nov 2009 vs Plumpton @ Peter van Hasselt Reserve                            Lost 15 – 22

One of the best starts we have had this year against a team coming top two.  The improvement in this team was evident in this game, despite it being a long morning and a warm day – even the other coach was amazed at how the team has improved.  Our batting practice paid off, particularly for our player of the match Matthew, who won the McDonalds Award for his great work off the team.

Round 10:     21 Nov 2009 vs Colyton St Clair Apache @ Peter van Hasselt Reserve Won 15 – 12

This was a really good game of tee ball, enjoyed by both teams.  While the Blues came out on top, it didn’t really matter as there was a great spirit between both clubs.  The batting was sensational with at least four of our batters scoring double baggers, a triple to Ray and a home run to Drew.  In the field there were two near catches and some good put out plays.  The backing up has improved and the throwing is getting there.  Player of the match was Ryan.

Round 11:     28 Nov 2009 vs Mackillop @ Chapman Gardens                                           Drew 15 – 15

The improvement in this team continues to impress both the coach and the opposition.  Our team hit their straps today, with hit being the key word.  Every player made base during the game and at least five had two bag hits or better, including a massive in the ground home run hit for Drew.  In the field, the throwing practice is starting to pay off as a number of players are getting long throws away and getting close to their targets, if not hitting them.  A big thank you goes to the players who helped Mackillop in the field and even got outs for them – your sportsmanship was most appreciated.  Player of the match was Dylan in his first game back from a spell – a big effort with no practice under the belt.
